Permanent residency in Italy is granted after five years of legal residence — time under a DN counts toward the period just like time under any other permesso (residence permit). When I looked into this, I read that the requirement is not to be absent for more than 6 consecutive months and not more than 10 months in total over the five years. If you break these limits, the count starts over.
