I’m preparing an EB-1A petition — I have media mentions and a few articles; submissions to academic journals are still in progress. I don’t understand how important citations are — are they absolutely required, or will petitions without them still be considered? Has anyone applied for EB-1 with no citations or with only a small number of publications — how did the officers respond?
If you’re going the academic route, it’s mandatory, and you need a lot of citations. If you’re in applied fields or just have some research activity, the situation is ambiguous.
Until literally a year ago, complaints about citations were rare. Now they’re brought up often, especially at the final merits stage, implying that citations should make you stand out among your peers as the cream of the crop. So it’s logical to assume you need to show that:
- You have citations
- Your top colleagues in your field don’t have citations, or that research activity in your area is the reserve of a select few
