I’ve heard that the I-485 adjustment of status is processed in about a year — is it really necessary to wait that long? And while the change of status is being processed, can you file for an EAD at the same time, or do you have to wait for the final decision on the I-485?
Of course you can file them at the same time — the EAD is submitted together with the I-485 in one packet. That’s what I did; otherwise I’d have been left without work while waiting for the decision. A year is about average — some people get it faster, some slower, and that’s roughly how it went for me. The EAD usually arrives before the main approval, somewhere around 6–8 months if you’re lucky.
