I arrived on a student visa D and need to apply for a residence permit, but I’ll be staying in a hostel for the first month — the apartment lease starts in a month and covers the whole study period. How should I apply in this case? Won’t there be problems because I don’t have a proper address at first?
in KIT (кит) you just put the address of the hostel where you’re living at the time of application — it doesn’t matter that it’s only for a month. We put the address of the apartment where we stayed for the first two weeks; nobody asked why it wasn’t long-term. But when you’re called in for fingerprinting, you’ll need a certificate of housing compliance, and by then you should already have the long-term lease in hand.
Thanks, that really reassured me. How long does it usually take from submitting the application to the fingerprinting? Do you think I’ll have time to move and get that certificate?
They usually wait 2–3 months, but it can vary. It depends on the Questura (immigration/police office). One girl said she waited six months in Rome, while in a small town they called her in for fingerprints within a month. So you’ll probably make it — the main thing is to arrange a long-term contract as soon as you move; the certificate is processed in a couple of weeks if the landlord doesn’t drag their feet.
