What documents do I need upon arrival in Italy with a D visa?

Could you tell me what I would need to arrange upon arrival in Italy if I obtain a D visa? Which specific documents are required, and does this depend on the purpose of the visa?

The D visa is only for entry into Italy; it doesn’t, by itself, replace a residence permit. You enter, basically get your fingerprints taken and apply for a permesso di soggiorno (residence permit) — that’s what will be your renewable basis for staying. You also need to get a social card and have all the necessary documents translated. Timing-wise, you don’t have to enter immediately after getting it; you can enter a couple of months later — the visa is issued for six months for entry.

Thanks for the detailed answer! Do I need to apply for the permesso (residence permit) immediately after entering, or is there some leeway?
