I can't figure out which type of visa I need to move to Italy

I’m sorting out documents for my move and got confused about visas. How can I tell whether a visa is national or a Schengen one? Is it written directly on the visa itself or do you need to look for something specific?

so look, on the visa itself in the “type” field there will be the letter D — that’s national, and if it’s C then it’s Schengen. Plus the national one is issued for a longer period and tied to a specific country. It’s literally all written right on the sticker, you won’t miss it)

there’s also a practical nuance - the D visa is tied specifically to Italy, while the Schengen C visa gives access to the whole zone. to work in Italy as an employee you specifically need a D work visa, even if the contract is for less than 90 days - it’s about the type of permitted activity, not just the duration. when I looked into this, I found the site vistoperitalia.esteri.it, which is run by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs - it has a section in Russian with a breakdown by category.
