Any options for affordable but decent accommodation in Florence? Rome is relevant too — I’m interested in renting in both cities.
In Florence and Rome, €1,200–€1,500 for decent housing — from my searches that’s the real minimum. If your budget is tight, it’s worth looking at the suburbs: for example Tivoli near Rome — about 30–40 minutes by commuter train to Termini — and the options are noticeably cheaper. Prato, near Florence, is also very close.

Thanks, I didn’t know about Tivoli. Does the commuter train go there often, or are the schedules a pain on weekends?

On weekends it’s about half as frequent there — plan on 40–50 minutes between flights.

Forty to fifty minutes between trains on weekends is still tolerable, but evenings are really bleak — after 10 p.m. there’s the last train and that’s it. And the 30–40 minutes to Termini is what’s on the timetable; in practice, with delays and a transfer it ends up taking much longer.

Prato, by the way, is much better when it comes to the commuter trains — they run every 15 minutes there, even on weekends with no surprises. Fifteen minutes to Florence is basically nothing. And in Rome you can’t find an apartment for €600, unless it’s three hours from your workplace.

Prato is a lifesaver — 15 minutes to Florence, and I found apartments from €800.
