Are there any pitfalls to switching to student status if your spouse has an O-1 visa? Or is it better to wait out this period without changing status at all? I’m specifically interested in this scenario — one spouse on an O-1, the other considering student status.
Hang in there, switching to student status is totally doable — just make sure to stick to the deadlines )

The timing of your I-20 is what matters — file your I-539 early so you don’t have a gap in status.

don’t worry, this setup works - I remember a story where the wife was studying calmly while the husband was on an O-1)

There’s a nuance with the I-94 — it currently shows you as a derivative O-3, and when filing an I-539 for F-1 the validity of the spouse’s status at the time USCIS makes its decision is critical. A colleague received an RFE exactly on this issue when her husband was simultaneously renewing his O-1; the adjudication was delayed by four months.
