Permanent residency in Italy — is it true you have to enter the country once a year?

I’ve been reading about permanent residence (PR) in Italy — everywhere it says the document is issued for 5 years with the right to renew, and during that time you can freely live and work in any EU country. But I’ve heard that you’re supposed to appear in Italy at least once a year, even for one day, otherwise they can revoke the PR. Is that really true or just a rumor?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but permanent residence (PR) depends not on the number of years you’ve held a residence permit but on the number of years of actual residence — i.e., if you really lived abroad for most of the time, they may not count those years. Another important factor is how many days/months you’re allowed to be outside Italy specifically for the PR application; that’s also worth considering so you don’t end up crying later.
