I want to transport a car to Italy. If I only have a Type D visa but don’t yet have a residence permit (permesso di soggiorno), can I register the car in my name? What steps do I need to take and where should I apply?

codice fiscale — it’s the first step; without it you can’t go any further. It’s issued at the Agenzia delle Entrate (Revenue Agency) with your passport and visa; without a permesso (residence permit) — in Pisa they issued it to me in 15 minutes. With it you can already get temporary Italian insurance and go to the motorizzazione (motor vehicle office).

Thanks — I’ve already got the tax code; they issued it quickly with the visa. Where did you arrange the temporary insurance, at a regular insurance agency or online?
