We entered Italy on a Schengen C visa and applied for a KIT (КИТ) for family reunification. Is that even allowed? I thought you needed a different visa when entering for reunification, but that’s how it worked out for us. Did we do everything right?
On coesione familiare (family reunification) with a tourist visa — that’s standard: they don’t request a nulla osta if you’re already in Italy, and the kit is sent by mail. My father came on a C visa to my mother, who has a residence permit (permesso di soggiorno); we sent the documents on March 18, and the appointment at the Questura for fingerprints was already scheduled for early April. They didn’t nitpick about the visa, everything went smoothly.

Thanks, Alyonka, I really feel relieved. And at the questura (квестура), when they took my dad’s fingerprints, they didn’t ask for anything extra — they only took the kit (кит) and his passport?

They asked us for a kit with the receipt, passport and the modulo 209 that the prefecture sends — that same letter also included the codice fiscale and the immigration agreement. They didn’t ask anything about the C visa.

The term of the kvestura (квестура) is determined at its discretion — by law the maximum for this reason is two years.

In theory, yeah, the scheme works, but 209 is a lottery — in some prefectures you wait a month and a half, in others two; getting three weeks is more a matter of luck. And the length of the residence permit (permesso) will follow the sponsor’s remaining term, not automatically two years as the law states — if the sponsor has eight months left, that’s what they’ll give you. This is important when you go to renew.

About the permesso (residence permit) — it’s standard practice under art. 29 of the TUI: they grant it no longer than the sponsor’s. If the sponsor has one year left before renewal, you’ll have to gather the documents again in a year. Better to immediately note when the sponsor’s expires and synchronize the renewals, otherwise you’ll end up making two trips to the Questura (police headquarters) instead of one.
