I ran into this situation when applying for a carta d’identità — an apostilled, translated birth certificate wasn’t enough; they demanded confirmation from the consulate. Is that the only way to prove place of birth, or are there other documents they accept? Has anyone had a similar experience?

At the registry office (anagrafe) in Turin they also required proof; in the end they accepted an apostilled translation of the certificate.

Thanks, Tatasha — so they accepted you in the end without the consulate? Weird that they’re asking me for it. I’ll try sending the PEC to the questura and check.

It’s the usual story — the official at the anagrafe (registry office) interprets the rules their own way. In Rome they accepted my apostille and that was it, no consulate involved. Try asking the head of the department; ordinary clerks often get overcautious for no reason. And if they still insist — you can now send documents to the consulate by mail, you don’t have to go there in person.

It depends on the anagrafe (анаграфе) — the same document is accepted differently in different cities; it’s not a system bug, it’s a feature.
