Should I take dollars to Italy, or is it better to sell them and buy euros in Moscow?

I’m going to Italy and I have dollars. Which is more advantageous — to fly with them and exchange for euros there, or to sell the dollars in Moscow for rubles and buy euros here before the flight?

Better to bring euros — at Italian banks they’ll simply refuse service to non-customers with dollars.

Thanks, Marisha — I’ll exchange to euros while I’m still in Moscow. In Italian banks, is it even possible to exchange dollars, or do they only accept euros?

At Termini on Via Gioberti they were changing money; the rate was €85 for a hundred bucks.

Don’t ever exchange money at the airport — I exchanged in Bergamo and the rate was so bad I would’ve been better off not doing it. At the exchange bureaus in the city it’s a completely different story — in Rome they gave €93 for a hundred bucks, but that was when exchanging at least $1,000, net after all commissions. 85, as people wrote here, is still just average for tourist spots.
