DS-160 form — photo becomes poor quality when uploaded, is that a big deal?

I’m filling out the DS-160 and noticed that the photo becomes low quality when uploaded — blurry and pixelated. Could this affect the review? Or does the system just compress the image and officers don’t care about that?

The system really squeezes the image, that’s normal — officers don’t pay much attention to it during the review. But definitely bring physical photos with you to the interview, it’s an embassy requirement. In about 1 in 100 cases there’s a bug in the system or a bad upload — then upon approval they’ll use the physical photo, not the electronic one from the DS-160.

don’t worry, take the physical one with you and everything will be fine)

By the way, the official website has all the sample photos — sizes from 600x600 up to 1200x1200. You can run it through a checker service and see how it looks. Take the photo like a passport photo and tweak the dimensions and file size; don’t forget the printed copy, of course)

The main thing is to bring a printed photo to the embassy — it’s okay if it got compressed in the application form)

You’ll be fine, everyone gets that blurry image after uploading - it’s normal)

The physical size should be 5×5 cm, not 3×4. A white background is required; remove your glasses. When I went in Moscow I printed two just in case — they took one.

When we applied, we also at first thought the photo in the application was critical — it turned out the officer only looks at the physical one. The main thing is a pure white background and a recent photo, no older than six months — that’s more important than any blurriness in the system. Hang in there)
