Do I understand correctly that the return route by air from Italy to Russia via the Baltic states is still available with an Italian tourist visa? Or is it just a matter of luck?
Under Italian law you can return. The problem is that in Russia airlines won’t let you board the flight — they don’t want to bring you back at their own expense if something goes wrong at the Italian border; it’s an established practice. I’d consider going via a visa‑free country — Serbia, Armenia, Turkey, Kazakhstan — and from there flying to Italy on separate segments with Italian carriers.

Thanks — I hadn’t thought about splitting the trip into separate segments through a visa-free country, that makes sense. If you fly via Serbia, don’t the Italian border officers at entry question where you flew from and why you didn’t take a direct flight?
