What visa is stamped in the passport when entering on an EB-1 — do our customs officers see it when exiting?

Could you please tell me what visa is placed in the passport for entry to the U.S. under the EB-1 category? I’m wondering whether, when departing at the border, customs officers will see that it’s a visa for permanent residency and that the person is leaving to take up permanent residence?

If it’s through the consulate (consular processing, CP), you’ll have an immigrant visa in your passport with the EB-1 category — the border officer will see everything on first entry and will also place an I-551 stamp as a temporary green card for one year. If you file the I-485 inside the U.S., there’s no visa in your passport — you just get the card by mail when it’s approved. My I-140 is approved under EB-1; I haven’t filed the I-485 myself yet, but I studied this exact detail.

Thanks, alexim — very helpful! If you file an I-485 inside the U.S., then if you leave the country before receiving the green card, won’t there be any stamps or other markings in your passport at all?
