Colosseum — do they accept cash at the entrance ticket office?

Online tickets for the autumn are already sold out, so I’m thinking of trying to buy them in person by standing in the queue at the box office. I’ve seen mentions that people do this — they stand and buy tickets on the spot. Has anyone done this recently — do they accept cash there, or only cards?

Basically, they take both cash and card on site, so that’s not an issue. But seriously, come early — by around 8 people are already waiting, especially in season. When I went I arrived at opening and easily got one, but my friend came by noon and there was nothing left for a decent time)

I realized this for the first time at Lake Como — people arrive and think they can immediately buy a ticket for the fast boat to Bellagio, but it turns out all the tickets are sold out; you have to buy them either early in the morning or the evening before. They’re not available online. So paying cash or by card isn’t the issue — the issue is that by noon there might simply be nothing available at a reasonable time.
