Who else has dealt with this? We were blamed for it ourselves back then, even though it wasn’t our fault — the same thing happened in Rome. I have no problem with Italians as a people. But when half the apartments in a building are used for short-term rentals, it really wears you down. Guests change every couple of days, and everyone behaves as they please: shouting at night, leaving trash everywhere, leaving bikes in the hallways, not closing the elevator — we have to go up and shut it ourselves. There’s an elderly couple in our building for whom this is really hard. The stairwell doors left wide open, mess, parties — I go to calm things down a couple of times a month. Tip: check your building on Booking, Airbnb, Italian Home for short-term rentals. And when choosing a place to live — it’s better to avoid living next to that kind of neighbors.
I rented a place myself just for the beginning — we arrived with my family and only looked for a long-term place once we were there. I get the neighbors who are annoyed by it — but some people simply don’t know any other option, especially at the very start when they don’t have a bank account or a guarantor. It’s not always tourists who don’t care.
