Anyone moved to Genoa or Turin with kids — how much do you spend per month?

I’m trying to estimate the budget for moving with two primary-school children. I’m interested in an approximate monthly range of expenses including rent for a three-room apartment. I know it varies for everyone, but on average — what do your costs look like in Genoa or Turin?

About utilities — realistically budget at least 250 a month; that’s roughly what we end up paying. You’ll most likely be looking for a three-bedroom a bit further from the center — in Turin or Genoa proper, prices in the center are noticeably higher, while in the smaller nearby towns the figures are different. When I moved I signed up for local stores’ newsletters — that way you start getting a feel for grocery and household prices much faster, instead of spending half an hour over every purchase.

Thanks, that’s really helpful about the shared apartment — I didn’t expect so much. If it’s farther from the center, how long would it take to get to Turin itself, roughly?

Honestly, with two school-age kids you end up going into the city center much less often than you think beforehand. We live like that ourselves — our whole life revolves around the school, extracurriculars, shops, our doctor, etc. So when I chose a neighborhood I looked first at whether there’s a decent school and child-friendly infrastructure nearby, not just how many minutes to the center. Half an hour by commuter train or bus is normal — you don’t need to go there every day.

Same here — we get into the city center at most once a month.

Are you personally leaning more toward Turin or Genoa?

A three-room apartment outside the center starts at about 800 a month; closer to the center they’ll easily ask 1200+. For a family with kids, count on 2000–2500 a month without many frills — utilities, food, transport, school-related stuff. But it really depends a lot on the neighborhood.
