L'idoneità alloggiativa for an Italian residence permit - what is it and where to get the certificate?

Can anyone explain in detail about l’idoneità alloggiativa (housing suitability certificate) — what certificates are needed, what it actually is, and where to get them? We still can’t get the residence permit; it’s been 1.5 years and they’ve sent a request for additional documents. Where should we start, where should we go?

On your municipality’s website, look for the section about idoneità alloggiativa — the requirements are usually posted there. Or just go in person and ask them to explain exactly what’s needed in your specific case, and bring whatever housing documents you have. When I helped with something similar in Turin, it turned out the list of documents varies between municipalities, and only a personal visit cleared everything up.

Thanks, I’ll try to go to the housing office in person. And the documents for the housing — is it the lease agreement, and what else should I bring?

Besides the contract, take the planimetria catastale (cadastral floor plan) of the apartment — it’s the plan with the measurements; without it they wouldn’t even start talking to us at the comune (municipal office). Also a marca da bollo of 16 euros (16-euro revenue stamp) for the certificate itself and a copy of the owner’s ID. The apartment size is the key point: they check how many sq.m. per person are allowed — they turned one girl away near Florence because a room for two turned out to be too small under the rules.
