Filing a mandamus lawsuit against the State Department — does it work for a tourist visa?

I heard that mandamus petitions are mostly filed for work and immigration visas when processing drags on for years. What about a tourist visa — can you also sue the State Department if a visa just sits with no movement? I’m specifically interested in filing a mandamus against the State Department: timelines and odds for a tourist visa — is it even worth pursuing or is that only for immigration cases? Has anyone tried this or knows of any such precedents?

People rarely do that on a tourist visa; mandamus petitions are mostly filed in employment and immigration cases. Right now mandamus doesn’t work the way it used to — the number of lawsuits is growing, the State Department is primarily occupied with them, and the chances of getting a visa quickly are decreasing. But you can consult a lawyer, at least to understand whether it’s worth bothering in your case
