I read that for the Digital Nomad visa to Italy a nulla osta is not required. But on the Italian embassy website I couldn’t find that specific visa — only several different Lavoro autonomo visas. In all of them, the list of required documents includes a nulla osta. So is it required or not?
There’s some confusion here. “Digital nomad” is formally a subcategory of lavoro autonomo (self-employment); they just didn’t create a separate field on the embassy’s website. A nulla osta (clearance) is required, but it’s issued under Article 26‑bis outside the quotas — so it will still be on the list of documents, it’s just easier to obtain than for regular lavoro autonomo (self-employment).
it’s required but it’s not the same procedure as for regular lavoro autonomo (self-employment). it’s processed under 26-bis outside the quotas, so there’s no separate section on the embassy website — legally DN is still a subcategory of lavoro autonomo (self-employment), hence the list of documents is the same.
Under Decree 286, if you look, Article 26 treats lavoro autonomo (self-employment) strictly by quotas, while DN are separately listed as exceptions. Hence the nulla osta remains zero — it’s just outside the quota via Article 26-bis. That said, you hardly hear of any DN visas actually being issued yet; people mostly go through the regular lavoro autonomo (self-employment) route with a conversion.
