What happened

Hi everyone. I got my O-1 petition approved in November as an AI Engineer. I was thrilled and thought the visa was in the bag, but not so fast. I went to the consulate in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (I work here), and they sent it for their own check (not a State Department administrative processing). Two weeks later they scheduled a re-interview and asked the same things — why I was considered extraordinary; I said I’m a great programmer. A week later I got a visa denial with a form note saying there weren’t sufficient ties to my home country. Has anyone encountered this? What can I do? (panic noises)

Key insight

“Even after an O-1 petition is approved, a visa can still be denied at the consular interview stage if sufficient ties to the home country are not demonstrated.”
