Return ticket when entering Italy — required from everyone or only tourists?

I’m planning a trip from Russia to Italy and can’t figure out whether I need to buy a return ticket in advance. Is it required only for tourists or for everyone upon entry? Has anyone crossed the border recently — did they check?

I flew from Istanbul to Rome; my return flight was from Paris — not from Rome. At passport control they didn’t ask about it at all. They checked my passport and visa, everything. They didn’t even ask for my hotel reservation, though I kept the printouts with me just in case.

Thanks, that’s exactly what I wanted to hear. So at passport control they don’t even check where the return ticket is from, as long as you have one?
