Permesso di soggiorno not appearing in the archive for 2 months — should I write to the immigration office?

I’m checking the status of my permesso (residence permit), and every time it’s the same — “not in the archive.” By the timelines I should have received it by now, but nothing has changed for a couple of months. Should I email the immigration office already or is it better to wait?

They promised me I’d get an SMS when it was ready, or that I could come pick it up myself if it didn’t arrive. Months went by with nothing — so I ended up going in person because I was fed up waiting for a reply. When I showed up, it was immediately clear where the document had gotten stuck. Honestly, they might not reply by mail at all.

Thanks — I guess it really is easier to just go yourself than to wait around for something to happen. Did they give it to you right away, or did you have to come back?

Not right away — it turned out they have separate pickup hours: twice a week there’s one window for walk-ins without appointments. The main thing is to arrive early to get a spot in line. But in the end I came at the right time and picked everything up in one go.

I went myself after a few months — our residence permits had been at the questura since April, but the SMS never arrived. One more important point: sometimes you go and find out that a document is missing. That happened to my husband — silence, then we learned that one document hadn’t been submitted. We submitted it and then waited some more. It’s better to go once and find out what’s actually happening than to guess why the status isn’t changing.

if you check by the receipt number, the information is often outdated — for me it always showed “insufficient documents provided” even though everything was fine. better to check by the case number on the Questura website directly — their statuses are more accurate. for me it went roughly like this: before fingerprints “case not found”, after fingerprints “case in process”, then “ready”. if something else is showing now or there’s no case at all — that’s definitely a reason to go in person and find out.

They promised us an SMS at the questura (квестура) — I didn’t get it and went there myself. There’s one thing not everyone immediately understands: delays can happen because they request additional documents, and the notification about that might simply never arrive. I saw a case like that — an appointment for a renewal, then a request for extra documents a few months later; the documents were submitted in April, but the SMS saying it was ready only arrived six months after that. They issued the card, but its expiry is one year from the date of issue — so in these situations it’s better not to just wait around.

My husband’s green checkmark appeared on the website about three weeks after the fingerprints — we went that same day and picked it up right away, without any SMS. The status on the site sometimes updates before the notification arrives, so it’s worth checking periodically — it might have been ready for a while.

And yeah, if you’re going — take everything with you: richevutu (ричевуту), passport, all the copies you had when you applied. When I asked what to bring they didn’t really explain, so I had to guess. Better to be safe than have to go back there again.
