Invitation from an Italian citizen skips the queue — only for close relatives?

Do you know if it’s true that with an invitation from an Italian citizen you can apply for a visa without waiting in line only if you’re a close relative? Or does that work for any invitation?

By law, the list for family reunification is specific: a spouse (husband or wife) aged 18 or older, minor children, and adult dependents. All of this goes through the coesione familiare procedure — two stages: nulla osta and a D visa. A regular invitation from a citizen is a completely different story; it doesn’t grant any priority in the queue.

Got it, thanks. So with a regular invitation there are no queue privileges, only the standard tourist procedure?

Yes, and one more thing about the sponsorship letter — it seems they’re now accepting it almost exclusively for children. For my husband it’s already a big question, so the tourist route isn’t an option here.
