While you’re waiting for work authorization, the waiting period drags on and it’s unclear what to do. What did you do during that time without an EAD (Employment Authorization Document)? What options are there to legally work in the US on a visa while you don’t yet have authorization?
EAD pending — you can’t work, period. The only option is an H-1B or O-1 concurrently, but that’s a different petition.

If the O-1 is still valid — you keep working on it; AOS (Adjustment of Status) doesn’t cancel it. The only issue is if the O-1 expires before the EAD (Employment Authorization Document) arrives — that’s when there’s a real gap. A combo card (I-765 + I-131 in one package) is filed together with the I-485; that closes the gap — at the Texas Service Center I waited 47 days after biometrics.

No O-1 or H-1B — there simply are no legal options to work. The combo card (I-765+I-131) closes the gap, but the O-1 has to survive until the EAD arrives — by approval statistics that’s 3–7 months.

O-1 extension for the EAD waiting period — that’s exactly why the attorney recommends extending. From a colleague’s experience who did O-1 → AOS, the combo card arrived in five months; the O-1 extension closed that gap without stress. Unauthorized employment while I-485 is pending is the 245(c) bar — that’s a totally different story, not a $2–3K issue.

I personally waited for my EAD for almost five months after biometrics — my O-1 just managed to hold until the card arrived, there was no gap. I filed the combo card (I-765+I-131) right away in the same package as the I-485 — that’s exactly what it’s for. The extension is expensive, but a gap without authorization isn’t a $3K problem, it’s an AOS issue itself — hang in there, it’ll pass)
