Distance education and US visa — do I need to declare it on the application?

Can anyone who’s gone through this while applying for a US visa advise? I’m enrolled in a correspondence/distance program (заочное), and I read somewhere that Americans don’t really understand that concept — their system doesn’t work that way. Is it mandatory to state this on the documents, or is there some way to get around it?

On the DS-160, distance/correspondence study is entered as regular education — there isn’t a separate field for the form of study. If you’re worried, you can add the note “distance/correspondence program” next to your diploma on your CV — the officer will understand.

Look, studying by correspondence isn’t a problem in practice. On the application you just write your education as it is; nobody’s going to check whether it’s full-time or not — they care about the diploma, not the format. Don’t psych yourself out)

When I was gathering my documents I also stressed over every little detail on the application — but it turned out the officer didn’t care at all; he didn’t even ask about the study format. Like others have said here, just fill it in as it is and don’t make anything up. The main thing is that the diploma is genuine and the details match.

Don’t sweat it, you have the diploma - so just write and don’t make things up.
